The choir followed up these honors with a world-premiere performance at Lincoln Center in NYC in 2011, an invitation in 2012 to appear at Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, home of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and a performance at St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican in 2013. Dr. Powell was a 1999 National Choristers Guild Scholar, a 2002 Fulbright Scholar to Bulgaria, and a semi-finalist for the 2012 American Prize in Choral Composition. He holds a D.M.A. in conducting from the University of South Carolina, where he studied with Larry Wyatt. He received both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Church Music from Belmont University where he was a Mathis Church Music and Dean's scholar, studying conducting with Tim Sharp and composition with John Arnn. His choral compositions and major works have been sung around the world, including recent world premieres at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center through DCINY. Dr. Powell holds memberships in Pi Kappa Lambda, The Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts, The Georgia Music Educators Association, The National Association for Music Education, and the American Choral Directors Association. He is a frequent guest conductor and is in demand as a clinician and adjudicator. Tim is married to his lovely wife Jennifer, and father to Lily and Danny. They live in South Carolina with two happy, escape-prone dogs named Wolfy (Amadeus) and Lando (de Lassus).
