Recognized by the San Francisco Classical Voice for music that "harnesses considerable expressive power," Matt Boehler is a singer and composer excited by the limitless possibilities of the theater and the concert hall. His most recent project, Marginalia, commissioned by Victory Hall Opera , was inspired by materials found by the researchers of the Book Traces project at the University of Virginia. Other recent commissions include instrumental works for Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, choral service music for the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine (NYC), a song cycle for the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, as well as incidental music and sound design for the new play That it all makes perfect by acclaimed San Francisco-based playwright Erin Bregman. Matt's song cycle, Foursquare Cathedral, was recently chosen as winner of the 2017 Art Song Composition Competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and is now included in the E. C. Schirmer catalog. Upcoming commissions include a song cycle for soprano Marnie Breckenridge, as well as a project for Washington National Opera.

Having earned his B.A. in Theater Arts at Viterbo University, and an A.D. in Opera Studies from Juilliard, he recently completed his M.M. in Composition at San Francisco Conservatory of Music, studying with David Conte. He was awarded first prize in SFCM's Bi-annual Choral Composition Contest, and he was the inaugural recipient of their Kristin Pankonin Art Song Award. While studying composition at the EAMA Nadia Boulanger Institute in Paris, he received mentions in harmony, counterpoint and score reading. As a singer, he has appeared as a principal artist with some of classical music's most prestigious companies and venues, including the Metropolitan Opera, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Canadian Opera Company, the New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center.
