The text is by the 7th century cleric, scientist and man of letters The Venerable Bede, who spent most of his life in Jarrow in the kingdom of Northumbria in the north of present-day England. The hymn was translated into modern English by Elizabeth Rundle Charles and Benjamin Webb in the Victorian era. - Derek Healey
