My Cherub Choir (age 4 through grade 2) did (the) Mustard Seed song the other week, complete with slide whistle and other instruments played by the children, and the warbling birdcalls provided by the whole chancel choir on cue. It was perfect, and everyone was delighted. Thank you so much! …We also did (the) Christmas Pageant as a Sunday School Easter program. We certainly were not able to include all the bells and whistles in that event, but (Tamara’s) planning for great leeway of bodies-available enable us to present it successfully with minimal rehearsal, which is every director's concept of A Great Resource. Just wanted to let you know that our children's choirs used (Singing Through the Church Year) for the song "Blessed Is He" for Palm Sunday. We all really like the collection. (We) have now been using the book with my children’s choir for a few months with a lot of success. We are singing the “40 days and 40 nights” song this Sunday. I wrote the bible story in sections (1 section per temptation), with one child reading the story, and then all sing “40 days” after each section. At the end, a child reads that after the devil left, angels came to take care of Jesus, and we sing a verse I wrote: Every day and every night, when you walk in the wilderness, the devil will tempt you, the devil will tempt you but you just say, “Go away! I serve God!” It has been so great to watch the kids really sing and enjoy the song, and to increase their beat competency on the small instrumental ensemble we do with it. The kids are really enjoying the leaves. I printed them on colored paper and laminated them, and a volunteer painted a tree on the wall that we sticky-tack them to. They are SLOWLY learning the names of the seasons, Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent... Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for pointing in a great direction and providing such a versatile resource. The book is great! It shows your love, talent, and devotion to the art of children's sacred music experiences! Thanks for the labor. The Christmas Story was a huge success! I didn’t make the liturgical tree but the SCS teachers did and are using it. The teachers are learning as well as the students. …Your book has given us new inspiration. I finally received a copy of your Wonderful book Singing Though the Church Year. You certainly have given directors of children's choirs what they have needed for some time - theologically sound material, quality music/texts, all beautifully illustrated. I also purchased a book for the University library. I am a new Musikgarten teacher (previously music therapist and special educator). I just purchased Singing Through the Church Year a few weeks ago when I was asked to be an interim children's choir director at our church. I have found it to be a great resource. I thought there was a Musikgarten influence there, and now I know why! Thanks again for such a wonderful guide. I, too, think a liturgical perspective is so important, and I look foward to sharing it with both my choir members and students.
