Biography

William Beckstrand, a composer of choral, instrumental, and liturgical music, has been inspired by the musical heritage of the church: Gregorian chant, early polyphony- from Praetorius to Bach, the brilliant work of Hugo Distler and Arvo Part. Influenced also by a love of jazz, Beckstrand’s harmonic language is complex, and decidedly modern, yet has been described by many as "organic."

The marriage of text to music is Beckstrand's strong suit, demonstrating his grasp and love of poetry and sacred text , and giving rise to his most notable success as composer within the choral genre.

From simple liturgical settings for the church, to large and complex choral and instrumental works, Beckstrand's musical idioms are unmistakable and uniquely his own.
