Robert
J. Powell has approximately 300
compositions in print for organ, instrumental ensembles, handbells
and choirs with various church music publishers. Recent compositions
include music for flute and organ, solo organ collections, and
music for choir and handbells.
Born in 1932 in Benoit, Mississippi, Mr. Powell received a Bachelor
of Music Degree in organ and composition from Louisiana State
University and a Master of Sacred Music Degree from Union Theological
Seminary School of Sacred Music in New York. He was Assistant
Organist at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York, under
his teacher, Alec Wyton, and later became organist/ choir director
at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Meridian, Mississippi, St. Paul's
School, Concord, New Hampshire and Christ Church, Greenville,
SC (for 34 years).
He is presently organist of Trinity United Methodist Church, Greenville,
SC. Married for 47 years, the Powells have three children and
four grandchildren.
